Techworks Scam (Online scam warning for Christmas shoppers, Guernsey news, Tuesday 16th November 2010)

Islanders are being given advice to make sure they don’t fall victim to online scams, this Christmas.

Guernsey Police have issued a Safe Christmas Shopping checklist.

A record number of people are expected to be buying Christmas presents online this year. More than 32 million people bought presents from online shops last year.

The tips from Guernsey Police, are as follows:
Keep your PC protected. Make sure all updates have been installed and you are using the latest operating system and anti-virus software.

Your card should be registered with Verified by Visa or Mastercard Secure Code. It adds another password that makes purchasing online even more secure.

Reputable websites should have a padlock symbol, which you should especially look out for if it is the first time you are buying from that website.

And finally, a simple and easy but very important tip – Always make sure you log out after shopping online, especially if you’re using an internet cafe or other public computer.

As well as these basic security tips, the force is also offering advice on how to cut stress, when shopping online. The advice is as follows:
Always avoid money transfers – they aren’t nearly as safe as using services such as PayPal or credit cards.

When using auction sites such as eBay, be extremely careful of sellers who have little or no selling history. Start a dialogue with them first and make sure you know exactly what you are buying and keep a record of your contact.

Never respond to emails allegedly from your credit card company or online payment site you are registered with that ask you to send your password and details – even if the email address looks legitimate. If you are unsure, ring up the company on its official phone numbers and speak to them directly.

As the name suggests, it is understood that a freedom to operate is the option or the right that makes you free from all legal obstacles to commercialize your product or process it in a particular country or geographical region. Legal obstacles for your product or process could primarily be valid patents, designs and (or) trademark rights. However, any other IP rights based on a particular jurisdiction (country or region) should NOT be overlooked.
